in support of HB 799 to members of education sub-committee #3

To: Sub-Committee: #3 Teachers & Admin. Action
From: Marybeth Haneline

We support HB 799 (Greason) that would make local school boards responsible for setting the school calendar and determining the opening of the school year and eliminates the post-Labor Day opening requirement and "good cause" scenarios for which the Board of Education could grant waivers of this requirement.

We join with the Virginia PTA in urging legislators to grant local school boards the authority to determine school start dates for the year (Code of Virginia 22.1-7.1)
